How far can EVs really go?
Modern EVs typically offer 250–350 miles of range. This book breaks down how variables like highway speeds and winter weather impact those numbers so you never have to worry about getting stranded. Use this EV unit conversion calculator to better understand the relationship between various EV efficiency units like MPGE and Watt-Hours / Mile.
How long does it take to charge?
This is the wrong question to ask, as the "refueling" process is totally different from what you're used to. Most of the time, charging happens overnight while you sleep, like your cell phone, so you are never caught off-guard having to refuel on your way to work. For road trips, fast-chargers can add significant range in about the time it takes to use a restroom and grab a sandwich.
Will my electric bill skyrocket?
While your home electric bill will go up, your gasoline "bill" disappears entirely. Your overall fueling costs will be cut by 1/3 or 1/4. In other words, if you currently spend $300 / month in fuel, you'll spend less than $100 / month in electricity.
Don't I drive too much for an EV?
Actually, the more you drive, the stronger the case for going electric. Fuel and maintenance savings scale directly with mileage, so high-mileage drivers see the biggest financial benefit. EVs are no longer just commuter cars, modern ranges of 250-350 miles and a nationwide fast-charging network make them fully capable primary vehicles for most drivers. The question isn't whether you drive too much, but whether you can afford not to switch.
A key mindset shift for EV curious folks: Electricity is everywhere; EVs just need it delivered the last 50–100 feet to your driveway (or workplace/public spot). Overnight home charging makes it effortless - "fueling up" in 5 minutes is irrelevant (though it is also becoming closer to EV charging reality).
